This is a single star, Sadr; it is the star at the center of the constellation Cygnus, where the wings of the swan meet the body. In the interest of full disclosure, I've copied this idea from another member of my star club, Rick Albrecht, who did a much better job of it. Good targets are hard to find at this time of year, given the very limited area of sky that I can see; I took the bait.

This bit of space is not cataloged. It's just a generic cloud of loose hydrogen with a star in front of it. Why some nebulae get named and others don't is a mystery to me. It's like naming some stones in a wall and not the others.

The clouds in the direction of this star are very faint; to capture enough nebula in the time I had resulted in the massive over exposure of Sadr and the bright stars near it. Ideally I should have run much shorter exposures over several nights, but clear nights are scarce in NY at this time of year.

It is hard to judge distance when looking at the stars. The 8 stars forming Cygnus the swan range in distance between 72 light years (78 Cyg, the tip of the northern wing) and 1832 light years (Sadr, the target in this set). This is an enormous volume of sky, but looking at how the light falls and guessing that Sadr is the main source of illumination, the bulk of the nebulae in the image are even farther away - Sadr is in front of the hydrogen clouds as we look at Cygnus.
